Blog week ending 19th December

Posted on: 18/12/2018

We have enjoyed a busy term of celebrations, marking academic achievement, coming together in support of charitable endeavours and sharing Christmas festivities.  We wish you all a happy and relaxing break and will welcome back students on Friday 4th January.

Y13 PPEs start when we return in the New Year so please ensure you are fully prepared.

The inter-house competitions are a hard-fought schedule of competitions and heats that run each lunch time.  The large range of events ensure there is something for everyone, allowing all to join in whatever their skill-set.  Activities so far include Rubik Cube puzzle solving, cricket, football, retro board games, basketball and speed-painting.  All inter-house points earned are combined with student reward points to provide the house totals.  Congratulations to Newton who are currently topping the inter-house competitions leader board.  The full scores for Term 2 are:

Congratulations to Ashraf M of 7S who has just become our first Year 7 ‘Accelerated Reader Millionaire’ of the current school year – meaning Ashraf has read over 1,000,000 words!  All students in Year 7 are on the Accelerated Reader programme, which promotes reading independently and suggests to students a range of books to read suitable for their ability. By reading and quizzing on each book, students can climb the levels and increase their word count. Becoming an AR Word Millionaire is a phenomenal achievement, which comes with a bonus of 15 House Points.

Year 8 also have some ‘Millionaires’ on the board this year, so congratulations to TJ of  8B, and Kameel J and Kai V of 8D.

Don’t forget that you can view students’ progress by going onto the Library homepage on the school website, and clicking on the Home Connect link. You need to use the Log In and Password that your child has been issued with. There is an option to request SMS or emails detailing any progress that they have made.

We must say a big thank you to the PTA for, once again, kindly providing the funding to provide each Year 7 with their choice of BookBuzz book. There was a lot of excitement when they were handed out, and I hope everyone is enjoying their free book.

Enjoy the holiday, and don’t forget to find the time to read.

Year 10 students took part in a one day art workshop run by visiting artist Ian Murphy.  He travels extensively through Europe and Asia drawing in his sketchbooks then using his drawings as a basis for very large drawings and paintings.  He brought a wide selection of his work for students to see, then taught them some of the techniques he uses.  Students had a fantastic day and were really inspired by his work.
